What I Saw at Lincoln Days

[ Patrick Tuohey ]

Since Steve Walsh was doing at the heavy lifting for The Missouri Record at Lincoln Days, I was free to mill about trying to avoid conversation.  I was not entirely successful, but I was witness to some notable things:

  • In what has to be a first in invocation history, Ed Martin received a standing ovation for his prayer before dinner on Friday night.
  • In a nod to religious diversity, the caterers chose to serve chicken and fish on that Lenten Friday.  However I heard two different speakers (unwittingly?) tout the Catholic doctrines of Purgatory and Reconciliation.
  • The weekend was clearly a rallying around Roy Blunt as the candidate for fill the Senate seat being vacated by Kit Bond--even though primary opponent Chuck Purgason was at the event.
  • Candidate for State Auditor, Tom Schweich, was attended to by a man who seemed about two feet taller--the contrast did not benefit Schweich.  This handler also referred to Schweich as 'professor.'  I am guessing that one doesn't win GOP primaries in Missouri by showcasing academic credentials.  But perhaps 'professor' is better than 'ambassador.'
  • Speaking of ambassadors, I met Ann Wagner, who recently submitted a piece to The Record about American Exceptionalism.  She had just finished her own talk at Lincoln Days, and was contemplating her career moves from red-meat partisan to diplomat to non-partisan.  The fashionable Ms. Wagner had at least one outfit change that day, as did would-be House Speaker Steven Tilley.
  • Tilley was complimenting himself at the Young Republicans state meeting on Saturday for getting more and younger activists involved in the party.  Though I never actually did a count of who had more volunteers among the 18-26 year old set, I understand that the Blunt campaign had 60 College Republicans come in from around the state to help out.
  • Unfortunately, when the CRs arrived in St. Charles, there were no hotel rooms reserved for them.  The Blunt campaign crammed some into a few rooms at a nearby Super 8 motel.  Others paid for their own board at the Embassy Suites.

Hey, Patrick, I heard a rumor Jacob Turk, the guy who is poised to defeat Emanuel Cleaver in November, spoke to the Missouri CR's and received quite an ovation. Can you confirm or deny?
