HHS and First Amendment Rights

To the editor:

There has been much said about the Obama administration and HHS mandate for religious organizations to include free abortion-inducing drugs, contraception and sterilization procedures in their health insurance plans. This move has been characterized by the main stream media and by the administration as a women’s rights issue. It is not. It is a clear violation of the First Amendment rights of those religious organizations that hold a firm belief regarding these practices. I would also suggest that each American’s First Amendment rights are at risk. If the Obama administration doesn’t care about the rights of the people that the Constitution is supposed to protect regarding religion, why would they honor the freedom of speech, or of the press, or of the right to peaceably assemble or the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances?

When religious groups are forced to deny their deeply held religious convictions, it is not called "balance"; it is called "tyranny."

A constitutional republic has provided protection for the individual and ushered in prosperity to our country that has never been known by any other country. We have been losing those constitutional protections for years and those losses have been accelerated in the last three years. Our country as we once knew it will not survive another four years of this tyrannical administration. Wake up! Study history. The United States of America are at risk.
